NEW YORK, April 4, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ — During this season of Lent, when Christians are reminded of the passion, death and resurrection of Christ, the Catholic movement Communion and Liberation is sponsoring the Way of the Cross on Good Friday, April 6, 2012 in cities in the United States.
In New York City, thousands of people will follow the Way of the Cross over the Brooklyn Bridge to Ground Zero. Timothy Cardinal Dolan and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will join participants for the first station at St. James Cathedral in Brooklyn. This is the 17th year that Communion and Liberation has held this procession over the Brooklyn Bridge.
In Washington, DC, Donald Cardinal Wuerl will join members of Communion and Liberation on the Way of the Cross at the Washington Monument. In Boston, Sean Cardinal O’Malley will join the procession at the final station at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. In Houston, Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Fiorenza will give the final blessing at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
Throughout the country members of Communion and Liberation will lead the Way of the Cross in cities including: Los Angeles (CA), Chicago (IL), Philadelphia (PA), Denver (CO), Seattle (WA), Montgomery (AL), Steubenville (OH), Evansville (IN), Duluth, Rochester, St. Cloud (MN), New Bedford (MA), Wichita (KS), and Salem (OR).
The Way of the Cross is a traditional Catholic procession that recalls the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Because of his resurrection, it is an event that mysteriously affects our lives today, not simply a commemoration of a fact that can be relegated to the past.
Communion and Liberation is an international movement in the Catholic Church founded by the late Monsignor Luigi Giussani in 1954. It is actively present in 70 countries and many cities in the United States. Communion and Liberation is a friendship, open to everyone, reminding everyone of the living presence of Christ in the Catholic Church.
